About this course

Our MEWP Operator Safety Training is designed to develop safe, confident, and job-ready operators across construction, agriculture, and industrial environments. Covering all MEWP types, including scissor lifts, boom lifts, and aerial work platforms, this compact program is built for every skill level, from first-time operators to seasoned professionals looking to renew their certification. As a structured MEWP training program for businesses, our self-directed format lets individual learners and entire teams progress at their own pace.

A Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) is any machine that lifts workers and tools to an elevated work position on a platform — scissor lifts that travel straight up, and boom lifts that reach up and out over obstacles. They show up everywhere from warehouse maintenance and electrical work to steel erection, sign installation, and orchard work, and a fall or tip-over from one is among the most serious incidents on any site.

This course delivers the theory portion of MEWP operator training: how to select the correct platform, inspect it, assess the ground and overhead environment, stay inside the load and stability limits, and respond when something goes wrong. Under Canadian OHS law the employer must also provide hands-on familiarization on the specific make and model and confirm competency through a practical evaluation — this program gives operators the knowledge base that makes that on-machine step quick and meaningful.

It suits new operators preparing for their first ticket, experienced workers refreshing their training, and supervisors who sign off on platform work and need to understand what safe operation looks like.

What you'll get

CSA B354-aligned curriculum

Theory built around the current CSA B354.6/.7/.8 standards for MEWP design, safe use, and operator training that Canadian inspectors reference.

Certificate of completion

A printable, dated certificate documenting the classroom/theory portion of your operator training for your own records and your employer's due-diligence file.

Scissor and boom coverage

Both vertical (Group A) and articulating boom-type (Group B) platforms are covered, so the training maps onto most rental and jobsite fleets.

Inspection and rescue checklists

Reference material for pre-use inspections, function tests, and emergency lowering that you can put to use on the machine the same day.

Self-paced online access

Work through the modules on any device, pause and resume on your schedule, and revisit any section whenever you need a refresher.

Employer familiarization guidance

Clear direction on the hands-on, machine-specific familiarization and practical evaluation your employer must complete to finish qualifying you.

Why choose us

Equipment Tutor builds its MEWP training around the standards Canadian regulators actually cite — the CSA B354 series and your province's OHS regulations — instead of generic, one-size-fits-all slides. The material is written by people who have spent shifts running scissor and boom lifts on real sites.

You learn the reasoning behind every rule, from ground-bearing capacity to fall-restraint anchoring, so the safe decision is the obvious one when you are working three storeys up.

Clear, practical, and actually Canadian

Finally a course that references the CSA B354 standards and our OHS rules instead of vague generic content. The pre-use inspection and rescue-plan sections lined up exactly with what our safety officer checks for. Passed and felt ready for the machine familiarization.

Good refresher before getting back on the boom

I've run boom lifts for years but hadn't done formal training in a while. The harness and fall-restraint module was a good reminder, and the part on overhead power lines and tip-over limits was bang on. Self-paced made it easy to fit around shifts.

Solid theory, well organized

Covered scissor and boom platforms thoroughly and the load-chart explanation finally made sense to me. Would have liked a couple more video clips, but the content and checklists were genuinely useful on site the next day.

Frequently asked questions

Does this course cover both scissor lifts and boom lifts?

Yes. It covers Group A vertical platforms such as scissor lifts and Group B boom-type platforms such as articulating and telescopic booms, including the differences in stability, fall protection, and positioning between them.

Is the certificate recognized by Canadian employers?

The certificate documents the theory/classroom portion of operator training aligned with the CSA B354 standards. To be fully qualified to operate, your employer must still provide familiarization on the exact machine you'll use and complete a practical evaluation, as required by provincial OHS regulations.

Do I really need fall protection in a MEWP?

In a boom-type MEWP, yes — operators are expected to wear a full-body harness with a lanyard anchored to the manufacturer's anchor point as fall restraint. Requirements for scissor lifts depend on the machine and your jurisdiction, and the course explains how to determine what applies.

How long do I have to finish, and can I repeat the modules?

The course is self-paced with no deadline pressure. You can stop and resume anytime and revisit any module as often as you like, which makes it easy to review before your hands-on evaluation.
